UPDATES ON DESTINATION KENYA – OCTOBER 2021

Inaugural Tembo Naming Festival held.
The festival that will be held annually seeks to raise funds for conservation of elephants and other species by rallying financial support from individuals and organizations.

DESTINATION EVENTS

The inaugural event attracted financial support from both private and public institutions with Kshs16.5 million being raised. The targeted amount is a 100 million within the financial year 2021 – 2022.

Human wildlife conflict is a major setback to conservation and the resources being mobilised will greatly address the menace.

Magical Kenya Travel Expo held Virtual in 2021
MKTE which was marking its 10th year since inception attracted 40 countries, including 11 from Africa, bringing together over 200 buyers and 100 exhibitors and the media as we sought to re-ignite the magic of travel through showcase of tourism products and experiences to the global trade.

The participants got a chance to hold one-on-one meetings on a highly efficient virtual meeting platform which had pre-scheduled meetings and speed networking sessions that reached key individuals. Participants also get involved in thought provoking panel discussions and watch exciting on-demand videos of our destination.

DEVELOPMENTS IN TRAVEL/TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE

Express way from Airport to be complete by Feb 2022.
The project is expected to be a game changer, one of a kind in East and Central Africa and will act as a link between East of the country and the West. It is expected to ease traffic in the busy highway making Nairobi more attractive to tourists and investors.

Jambojet Starts Operations to Lamu
Jambojet has commenced operations to Lamu, becoming its fourth Coastal destination after Mombasa, Malindi and Ukunda. The regional carrier will now fly from Nairobi to Lamu via Mombasa four times weekly with an introductory fare of Sh7,100 one way from Nairobi to Lamu Mombasa to Lamu will start at Sh4,600 one way.

KLM to launch Amsterdam-Mombasa flights
Dutch national carrier KLM is set to launch direct flights from the Amsterdam to the Kenyan coast in November, offering a sigh of relief to the tourism sector currently recovering from the effects of Covid -19. The airline will operate two flights a week from Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam to Mombasa using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner starting November 2, with a loop to Nairobi from Mombasa. KLM will be joining a host of European carrier such as Eurowings, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, currently flying from Frankfurt to Zanzibar via Mombasa.

British Airways resumes Nairobi-London operations
The airline charges an average fare of Sh171,000 for a return air ticket to London from Nairobi, which is slightly higher than the fare before the Covid-19 pandemic. It will fly on the route once per week down from daily flights it was operating pre-pandemic.

Lamu Port to Boost Tourism in the region
The newly opened state of the art Port of Lamu is expected to catapult Kenya Coast tourism business giving it a much-needed lift to the sector’s fortunes. This is as more cruise ships are expected to dock at the port, with Kenyan coast increasingly becoming attractive to cruise ships.

The Kenyan coast is a preferred destination for cruise holidaymakers since after arrival at the port; it takes them a short time to head to national parks for safari. The region also has numerous other destinations including hotels that boast international standards.

COVID UPDATE OCTOBER 2021

Kenya to Accelerate Covid-19 Vaccination
By the end of this year, the government targets to have vaccinated 10 million adults with a total of 10 million vaccines having been already ordered from Johnson & Johnson with the first consignment expected in August.

A. GENERAL TRAVEL REQUIREMENT
 Operating crews are exempt from COVID-19 test when on a layover between flights. They must adhere to COVID-19 protocols from airport to hotel/residence and back to airport.

 All travelers (children) below the age of 5 years will be exempted from COVID-19 negative PCR test to enter Kenya.

 All travelers will be expected to fill the travelers’ locator form and submit before travel to http://bit.ly/covid19moh and thereafter submit daily health information to jitenge platform for 14 consecutive days.

 Diplomats and Senior government officials will be exempt from quarantine but must be in possession of negative PCR test conducted within 96 hours before travel.

TRAVELLERS FROM THE FOLLOWING STATES AND TERRITORIES SHALL BE REQUIRED TO UNDERGO MANDATORY QUARANTINE FOR 14 DAYS UPON ARRIVAL INTO KENYA IN A GOVERNMENT APPROVED FACILITY AT THEIR OWN COST:

1. Brunei

2.Thailand

3. Kuwait

4. Qatar

Covid-19 pandemic test at airports and points of entry.

Visitors through ports of entry are required to produce Covid-19 PRC Certificate, acquired no more than 96 hours prior to travel into the country. The certificate must be validated under Trusted Travel platform.
